Victoria’s Secret: show and scandal

November has been a busy month for the ubiquitous lingerie brand, Victoria’s Secret. Just two months after launching their new flagship London store on Bond Street, their annual fashion show was held on Wednesday 7th November, in New York: it was a spectacular showcase based around the dual themes of the Circus and Angels in Bloom.

Who’s who and what’s on?

The show featured outlandish creations used to accessorise the new underwear collection, including over-sized wings of feathers, stars, flames and flowers. There were also sexy Candy Striper and cheerleading outfits, not to mention a harlequin clown and a tiger costume to add to the fantasy. The runway was graced by models, including new girls Cara Delevigne and Lily Donaldson, alongside well known Victoria’s Secret girls, Miranda Kerr, Doutzen Kroes and Adriana Lima. Entertainment was provided in the form of live music from Rihanna, Bruno Mars and Justin Bieber.

Expensive undies

The highlight for many was the annually redesigned Fantasy Bra, this year worn by Alessandra Ambrosio. The bra is a spectacular, one-off, custom-made construction adorned with feathers, flowers and 5000 stones, including rubies, sapphires and a white diamond. The set is worth more than two million dollars.

Scandalous behaviour

The show has since sparked a number of scandals, not least a twitter storm around Bieber and his back-stage carousing with numerous scantily clad models. This in turn set the rumour-mill in motion, with questions arising about his fidelity to long-term girlfriend Selena Gomez and the future of their romance. What is more, the choice to have model Karlie Kloss wear a full Native Indian headdress, complete with feathers and regalia, to accessorise a turquoise two piece has provoked outrage from the Native American community. This comes just a month after Victoria’s Secret recalled their online artwork for the ‘sexy little Geisha’ line, after being accused of ‘the tasteless over sexualising Asian women.’ VS has apologised and removed the Native American outfit from the footage of the show that will air on the 5th December.
